National doughnut day, apple pie day, ice cream day...the list goes on and on. But if you love dance, and especially if you're a vintage enthusiast, you may want to celebrate World Lindy Hop Day by either finding a dance class in your area or just watching YouTube videos of the timeless dance. The Lindy Hop originated in the 1920s in Harlem and became a popular dance in the 30s-50s era. It's a partner dance that has influences from the Charleston and Tap dance. You can find out a more detailed history of the Lindy Hop by visiting The Lindy Circle. Here in Michigan, the American Lindy Hop Championship organization has events going on May 22-26th, 2015. They also have an annual Lindy Hop championship event with dance workshops in Detroit which takes place this year September 11-13th, 2015. You really won't want to miss that if you're in the metro Detroit area! Also, be sure to like their Facebook page to stay up to date on classes and events going on year round! |
And for your viewing pleasure, check out this clip from a 1941 film called Hellzapoppin with Lindy Hoppers in action! Amazing! It takes great skill to do this and so much fun!
