Vintage Life Magazine - Chilli's Review |
I don’t know about you, but I love magazines. Like, really love them. I remember when I was in middle school and bought my first magazine called Teen. I couldn’t wait to get home from the store, lay in my bed, read all of the articles, and see all of the latest fashion trends. I remember that feeling distinctly, however after a while, that initial super giddy feeling about magazines fades with time. Until today. I haven’t felt this excited about reading a new magazine since my middle school days, and let me be clear that Vintage Life Magazine is a must-have for every pinup’s coffee table. It celebrates our style – not only fashion, but home style as well. If you’re a vintage enthusiast, this magazine will have you feeling like each page was tailor-made with you specifically in mind. With my glass of cherry wine in hand, I happily got lost in each page.

Little Known Black History Fact: Dona Drake
Dona Drake was a black actress, singer, and dancer who was famous in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. However, publicly, her fans would not learn of her African ancestry until years later after studio publicity inaccurately claimed that she was born Rita Novella in 1920 in Mexico City, giving the impression that she was of Mexican heritage. In actual fact, she was born November 15, 1914 in Florida to Joseph Westmoreland (of Arkansas) and Novella Smith (of Alabama) and they named her Eunice Westmoreland. U.S Census reports of her family history show her grandparents were one Black couple and one couple that was Black/White. Because of her features and dark curly hair, film makers often cast her when they needed to fill the role of an ethnic character that looked native, gypsy, or middle eastern.

Jennifer Jackson is most famous for being a print and runway model in the sixties, but she is also a passionate children's rights activist and advocate of foster care awareness.
Most notably known for her modeling work with Playboy, she broke down barriers as the first African-American to be published in Playboy magazine and made history as the first black woman to be Playmate of the Month. She debuted in the magazine as Playmate of the Month in March 1965. This was groundbreaking at a time when European beauty standards dominated the visuals that were seen in the media and black models were just not seen in advertisements or major publications.
